The school district’s program, Unlocking the Genius, is an initiative to help students to identify their personal strengths and interests—which helps the students to create a high school plan that will empowers them to reach their post-secondary and career goals.

The students come to The Art Institute of California—San Diego for a full day experience of hands-on activities. Schools participating in the program include the Language Academy, Longfellow, Perkins, Logan, Innovation Middle, ALBA, Mt. Everest, Muir, Riley, and the School of Creative and Performing Arts.

Unlocking the Genius allows each 8th grade student in the San Diego Unified School District to leave middle school with a personalized four-year plan and career experience.

In December 2016, The Art Institute of California—San Diego hosted the Language Academy for a day of activities. 83 eighth graders, five teachers from the Language Academy, and five instructors from San Diego Unified School District were in attendance. The students participated in workshops that focused on helping students to discover future career paths and options.
