Recently, The Art Institute of California—San Diego, a campus of Argosy University, partnered with the Springhill Marriott of Mission Valley to host an event called “Art of Local.”
During the summer quarter, Chef Mia Saling, instructor for the senior culinary practicum class, wanted her students to host an event off campus to showcase what they’d learned in class—by producing a large scale event. Lauren Loeffler, director of campus relations worked with Chef Saling, the students, and Anne-Marie Coman, director of Sales from the Springhill Marriott of Mission Valley to bring the event to life.
The culinary class students created four live action stations. They served the local community bites including chicken and waffles and coconut curry pho. The class was responsible for the set up and break down of their stations, along with preparing, sourcing and transporting the food.
In addition to the food stations, the campus displayed an array of artwork from students during the event. Patrons and community members were excited by the dishes and the professionalism of the students. One student, who owns the local bakery Cake and the City, contributed a table of desserts to the event.
The Springhill Marriott of Mission Valley will continue to collaborate with the senior culinary practicum class to offer a venue for their final project in the upcoming quarters.
