What would you say is the defining moment in your life when you knew you were destined to become a creative professional?

I believe I was always meant to be a creative professional, just by my very nature. I discovered photography at age nine and it became a vocation.

How do you weave your professional background into the classroom experience to provide an industry veteran’s sense of the realities / challenges / opportunities of the
profession?

A sincere, passionate, and approachable attitude, along with professionalism and proven skills, are key to helping creative people succeed. I try to portray those qualities with my clients, as well as my students.

Is there a class assignment that exemplifies your approach to teaching and mentoring? Similarly, how does your approach inspire each student to push themselves beyond their own perceived limits?

I recently revised a Fundamentals class. The fun, yet challenging part was creating a meaningful photography learning experience for non-photography students. I envisioned the course as not only teaching the fundamentals, but also showing students how photography intersects with their future roles. I’m very happy to see them creating great images and effectively applying them to real-life projects.

In your opinion, what is the single most important thing you impart to your students to help them succeed in your class and in the real world? Alternatively, what is the most critical advice you would offer any student as he / she embarks on a creative career?

Perspective. See the big picture. And be patient—with yourself and with others.

Is there anything else you’d like us to know about you, your experience, or your role as a faculty member at The Art Institutes?

In addition to teaching for The Art Institute of California—San Diego, I am also a full-time faculty for The Art Institute of Pittsburgh—Online Division.
