Carlos Rodriguez

My education helped me to become experienced in 3D programs and honed my work ethic to make me effective in the industry. It also helped me to grow my network before even graduating. Creates Road Surfaces and Buildings in 3D

Carlos Rodriguez is a 3D production artist for HERE, responsible for creating road surfaces and buildings in a 3D program. “These 3D assets are modeled after existing cities to be used in the HERE map app. I also quality check others’ work, and create/edit buildings to match the city,” he says. He faced a tough situation when a company he was working for was bought out. “All contractors, including myself, were let go. After receiving the news, I immediately began updating my resume and creating work for my portfolio. I also got in contact with friends from school to see who had opportunities open.” While job searching, he worked on personal projects and refused to feel defeated. Carlos recommends taking a breather when things get rough. “Stop and breathe, also relax. Continuing working while in a panic will only lower quality and increase mistakes. A five-minute pause will help you more than you think.”

Carlos continues to challenge himself by working on personal projects—treating them like homework. He also participates in a group art showing every other week to keep his creativity flowing—and to see the creativity of others.

Carlos, who in 2013 earned a Bachelor of Science in Game Art & Design from The Art Institute of California—San Diego, says that his education provided a solid foundation in 3D programs. It also showed him the determination and dedication needed to be effective in the industry. “In school, I learned how to grow my network before even graduating.”
