The school opened in 1916 as The Commercial Art School, one of the country's first applied art and design schools. In the 1930s, the college became widely known as Ray-Vogue School, with programs in art and design. By 1991, the school moved to its Schaumburg location, and in 1995 joined The Art Institutes system of schools and was renamed The Illinois Institute of Art—Schaumburg.
