ARTimation 2018: A Night Out at the Big Screen

By: JaNae Contag | Adjunct Faculty

March 3, 2018

One of the best parts of being a creative is when all the long hours of production, critiques, honing in on craft, and developing process culminate in a successful portfolio piece. When the work can be shown to people, talked about, and result in that feeling of, “Wow. I actually made this!” It’s pretty awesome.

On February 8th, that happened because ARTimation’18 happened!

ARTimation Digital Arts Festival is an annual event hosted by The Illinois Institute of Art—Schaumburg that features a screening of works by our student artists. This year, Classic Cinemas in Elk Grove Village hosted us.

Over the past several months, faculty on the ARTimation Committee collected work from students, recent graduates, and student teams and organizations (such as Director’s Cut and Speak Easy, student-run organizations) for consideration for the festival. A team of judges, comprised of professionals working in the industries of Photography, Game Design, Visual Effects, Motion Graphics, Film, Animation, Audio, and Interior Design reviewed works submitted by students, and selected works for inclusion in the screening. They identified the “Best in Show” across 11 different Media Arts and Design categories.

A screening for high school students was held during the afternoon, followed by a Question & Answer session, lunch, and tours of the ILIS campus.

In the evening, ILIS students, faculty, friends, parents, and our campus community attended the screening and ARTimation awards ceremony, equipped with popcorn, soda, and anticipation for the reel. Ryan Black, Academic Chair of the School of Media at The Illinois Institute of Art—Schaumburg, gave an engaging welcome speech and introduction to what the audience might expect, detailing some highlights to look for in the reel to come.

After the screening, the “Best in Show” awards were presented from the ARTimation Committee to our students.

The atmosphere of the event was electric (even despite the pending blizzard!), and the audience enjoyed an amazing show. Our campus community left feeling the pride and accomplishment for the great work, conversation, and recognition. Here is the list of our “Best in Show” winners, and a few shout outs to our judges and the individuals who made the event possible!
