(Seattle, November 2015) Can donated clothing from Goodwill be fashionable? The Art Institute of Seattle partnered with Seattle Goodwill for the Goodwill Design Challenge and Glitter Fashion Show on Friday, November 6 at Bell Harbor. Fashion instructor, Ali Basye from The Art Institute of Seattle, along with Kim Tepe from Seattle Goodwill, discussed the event and student designs on KING 5 News (NBC-affiliated television station located in Seattle).
The theme of the event was “In the City” and included an evening of thematically inspired dining along with the Goodwill Design Challenge and Glitter Fashion Show. The challenge included five schools, including The Art Institute of Seattle, which had seven fashion students participate. As part of the competition, students spent 45 minutes digging through the bins at Goodwill and designed fashionable clothing with only the materials they were able to find in the bins. They then displayed their designs at the Goodwill Design Challenge and Glitter Fashion Show.
Goodwill Design Challenge and Glitter Fashion Show is the only fundraising event. All proceeds support their job training and education programs, which last year, served more than 8,700 individuals at ten locations. The focus for this year is Goodwill’s Youth Programs, which are centered on college and work readiness for youths aged 15-24.
